How is CBD Processed?



Cannabidiol aka CBD comes from the resinous flower clusters of the female hemp plant.  To produce CBD oil, the resins in the plant must be extracted, refined and isolated.  This is an very expensive and time-consuming process.  It requires special machinery that costs hundreds of thousands and or even millions of dollars depending on the size of the operation.  


There are Four Primary Stages to processing CBD Oil:


Cultivation

In short, hemp is a prime plant to grow organically since it doesn’t require a great deal of supplementary nutrition and is reasonably pest- and disease-resistant.  The regulations for pesticide use in farming of any type are primarily federal in nature, though your state may have more stringent pesticide regulations.  The growing cycle for hemp is approximately 108 to 120 days.  


Extraction

Carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction is the most common method of distraction.  It's becoming increasingly popular for extracting top quality cannabis oil high in CBD. (CO2) extraction is considered to be more environmentally friendly, considerably safer, cleaner, cheaper and less toxic than using fossil fuel based extraction – and results in a consistent product that is more palatable.  It's also used to make various food and other products.  Basically, oils are extracted from the flowers using various type of solvents. Then the solvent is removed leaving behind the extracted oil.  At this stage, the product is referred to as raw hemp extract.


Refinement

Fractional distillation of the oil or refinement requires that the oil be heated to a high temperature under a reduced pressure created by a vacuum pump.  This causes the THC and related cannabinoid substances to vaporize. The vapors are condensed back into an oil on contact with a cooled surface. The desired fraction is collected by selecting the appropriate temperature and pressure for the distillation. Many of the impurities do not vaporize and are left behind in the flask used for heating the oil.


Isolation  

CBD isolate is a highly specialized and technical process that fits within the overall hemp manufacturing process.  At this stage, the entire process is basically combined from start to finish. To recap, the process involves growing quality hemp flower biomass that has less than 0.3% THC. Harvesting and drying the flower so it can be extracted.  Solvent removal.  Refining and Production This process typically requires a specialized facility and specialized equipment with trained operators.
