There are 3 Classifications of Cannabis; Indica and Sativa are the most common. The third classification is Ruderalis. There are 113+ identified cannabinoids so far. Marijuana is one of the most celebrated plants in the world due to its medicinal and intoxicating properties.  So what is THC  and what is all the hype surrounding it?

  • According to Wikipedia, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis.  The term THC refers to the Delta-9-THC isomer with the chemical name Delta Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol or marijuana. THC is found most abundantly in the flowers of female marijuana plants.  These flowers are coated in small resin glands called trichomes.

  • THC was first discovered and isolated by Bulgarian-born chemist Raphael Mechoulam in 1964.  It was discovered when smoked, tetrahydrocannabinol is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.  It travels to the brain, attaching itself to the naturally occurring endocannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors located in the cerebral cortex. This part of the brain is responsible for thinking, happiness, memory, pleasure, coordination, and movement.

  • According to History.com.editors, Marijuana, cannabis or pot has a long history of human use. Most ancient cultures didn’t grow the plant to get high, but instead, it was grown as herbal medicine. Early settlers also grew hemp for textiles and rope.  The cannabis or hemp plant originally evolved in Central Asia into Africa, Europe, and eventually the United States likely starting around 500 BC. In the 1800s, a man named Sir William Brooke O’Shaughnessy found that cannabis extract could help lessen stomach pain and vomiting.

  • Cannabis extracts were sold in pharmacies and doctor’s offices in Europe and the United States to treat stomach problems and other ailments. Political and racial factors in the 20th century led to the criminalization of marijuana in the United States. Effective May 1, 1971, the Controlled Substances Act made Marijuana a Schedule 1 drug along with heroin, LSD, Ecstasy, and Magic Mushrooms.
